About this recording
Mehitabel (Hitty) Preble was carved from a piece of mountain ash by a traveling peddler in Maine during the 1820s. Though she was only a small wooden doll, mountain ash is said to bring good fortune—and Hitty's long life was certainly filled with adventure. She began as the treasured possession of Phoebe Preble and her remarkable journey took her across the oceans and back to the US, from North to South, and through the homes of many owners. Some were kind and gentle, recognizing her quiet dignity, others were rough and thoughtless, seeing her as only an old, worn out doll.
